Use case
Digital wallets
Recover access to wallet keys without introducing centralised key custody.
The challenge
What breaks today.
Self-custodial wallets lose users to a single failure: a lost device or forgotten passphrase ends access permanently. Adding a provider-held backup turns a self-custody product into a custody product, with the liability and regulatory weight that follows.
How Anastasis applies
- Wallet keys are protected client-side before any recovery material leaves the device.
- Recovery material is distributed across independent providers, which may include the wallet vendor, a partner institution and a neutral third party.
- Recovery policies can combine device attestation, an email or SMS challenge, a security question or an in-person verification step.
What to think about
- Recovery flows should be tested against realistic user populations, including users who change phone numbers or email addresses.
- Provider selection determines the practical trust model — diversity of jurisdiction and operator matters.
